Can women travel in Iraq?

Women do travel in Iraq, but the experience can be very different from traveling independently in many European or North American destinations. Cultural expectations vary by region and setting. Planning your transport, accommodation and daily movements in advance can make the trip considerably easier.

Dress and cultural etiquette

Conservative clothing is generally the easiest choice, particularly when visiting religious sites and traditional communities. Carry a scarf for situations where covering your hair or shoulders is expected. At shrines and mosques, follow the site’s specific dress and photography rules. Your local guide can explain what is appropriate before you enter.

Getting around

For a first trip, many women choose to travel with a local guide and driver rather than navigating long-distance transport alone. This can simplify hotel check-ins, checkpoints, local communication and visits to places where cultural context matters. It also gives you someone to ask when plans change.

Religious and rural areas
