When is the best time to visit Iraq?
For many travelers, the cooler months are the most comfortable period for exploring Baghdad, Babylon and southern Iraq. Autumn, winter and early spring generally make long days of sightseeing more manageable than the hottest part of summer. Exact conditions vary from year to year, so check a current forecast before traveling.
October to April: comfortable for major sightseeing
From autumn through spring, travelers can combine Baghdad with Babylon, Najaf, Karbala, Ur and Uruk without the intense heat of the summer months. This is also a popular period for multi-day journeys because outdoor archaeological sites are easier to explore at a comfortable pace.
The Mesopotamian Marshes
The marshes are a year-round landscape, but the experience can change with weather and water conditions. Cooler months are generally more comfortable for boat trips and spending time outdoors. Sunrise and sunset are especially atmospheric, and an overnight stay can give travelers a much deeper experience than a short daytime visit.
The Ahwar of Southern Iraq is a UNESCO World Heritage property combining wetland areas with the archaeological sites of Uruk, Ur and Eridu. Water levels and local conditions can influence the exact route, boat experience and access on a particular day.
What about summer?
Summer can be extremely hot in central and southern Iraq. Travelers visiting during the hotter months should plan outdoor sightseeing around cooler parts of the day, stay hydrated and allow more flexibility. Hotels and vehicles with reliable air conditioning become particularly important.
