The Mesopotamian Marshes, known in Arabic as the Ahwar, are among the most distinctive landscapes in southern Iraq: broad wetlands surrounded by an otherwise hot and arid region. UNESCO’s World Heritage property, the Ahwar of Southern Iraq, combines four wetland areas with the archaeological remains of Uruk, Ur and Eridu. UNESCO describes the marshes as an important inland delta system with exceptional ecological and cultural value.
